What are the most common MIG welding gas mixes and why do ratios matter?
The most widely used MIG shielding gas for mild steel is 75% argon / 25% CO2 (C25). Increasing CO2 content increases penetration and heat but also increases spatter; reducing it gives a cleaner arc with less spatter. For stainless steel, a tri-mix or argon/CO2 blend of around 98% Ar / 2% CO2 is common to prevent carbide precipitation. Aluminum requires pure argon.
