What is the difference between CGA and non-CGA gas connectors?
CGA (Compressed Gas Association) connectors follow a published standard that assigns specific thread sizes, handedness, and physical dimensions to each gas type, making it impossible to accidentally connect the wrong regulator to a cylinder. Non-CGA connectors appear in some imported or proprietary equipment. Always use CGA-compliant connectors on cylinders: the CGA standard is the safety backbone of the whole oxy-fuel gas system.
Why do fuel gas connectors have left-hand threads while oxygen connectors have right-hand threads?
Left-hand threads on fuel gas (acetylene, propane, etc.) connections are a deliberate anti-mix-up design. Standard right-hand-threaded oxygen fittings cannot be screwed into left-hand-threaded fuel gas ports, preventing the potentially fatal error of connecting oxygen directly into a fuel gas line. The fuel gas nut is also identified by a groove machined into the outside of the swivel nut.
Can I use a Teflon tape or thread sealant on gas connector threads?
No — do not use Teflon tape or pipe dope on oxygen connectors. Organic materials like PTFE tape can ignite violently in high-pressure oxygen. Fuel gas connections should also not use standard pipe dope; use only sealants specifically approved for the gas service (such as an oxygen-compatible thread sealant where a manufacturer specifies one). Most welding gas fittings are designed to seal metal-to-metal with a flat or tapered seat and do not need thread sealant.
